Large Format Vinyl Wrapping

Updating the look of your RV, truck or boat can be as easy as printing a new vinyl wrap and applying it.  Let your creativity go into full force as you design an image that can represent you and/or your business.  Here’s how to print on a large format printer and  how to vinyl wrap a large object (truck, houseboat, rv).

Roland SOLJET Pro 4 XR-640 is the best large format printer on the market!  This wide format (64 inch) plotter and cutter is precise, quick and efficient.  Offering the use of 8 different colors with 4 different color variations.  These large format prints are so vivid and offer up a “wow” factor unlike other printers.  This printer is perfect for banners, signs, decals, vehicles, boats, etc.

Here are the 4 different color variations that help make the prints look so real:

  • CMYKLcLm + Light Black
  • CMYKLcLm + White + Metallic
  • CMYKLcLm + Light Black + White
  • CMYKLcLm + Light Black + Metallic

Most people will design their large image in Photoshop Illustrator and then send it to Roland Versaworks Rip Program where you can then tweak your design as needed. You can adjust the ink amount that goes onto the vinyl, adjust the colors, or flip the image if you are printing on two sides of something.

When it comes to vinyl wrapping a large object you first want to take accurate measurements of whatever you plan on wrapping.  For this post we will be talking about a houseboat, so we took overall measurements, took some photos of the houseboat and took measurements of all the windows where there wouldn’t be any vinyl.  Some vehicles will have exact templets of the vehicle make and model that you get online, this doesn’t apply with a houseboat, but for other large vinyl jobs it is convenient.

Once you have your measurements and templet made then you can begin the design process in Photoshop Illustrator.  Adding in ghost images that overlap to create depth, business logos/brands, splatters, dripping ink pieces, shadows, themes… let your creativity run wild!   Then transfer your image to Versaworks and get ready to print.

If you are printing on Avery or Oracal you want to do a color profile to ensure that your colors print the way you intend for them to look.  Most people will pick a piece of their artwork to test print.  However, some vinyl printers do NOT do test prints unless there is a specific pantone color that they need to match for brand recognition (think of McDonald’s golden arches).

You can choose to print your image vertically or horizontally depending on the surface you are wrapping, how many people you have to helping you, and by the number of seams that you will want to have.

The picture below shows a houseboat being wrapped horizontally which look challenging, but they had enough guys helping to make it work.  Also their design was very detailed so it was probably a smarter choice for them to have just one seam to have to worry about lining up rather than 5 or 6.

When you get to the actual vinyl wrapping process you first want to clean and prep it.  Some people will detail their vehicles before, but for a houseboat you can spray and wipe down RapidPrep.  Once the surface is fully dry then you can begin to wrap.

If you are wrapping vertically then you would tape the middle, cut the backing off of the top and apply the top vinyl piece first.  Then you would apply the bottom piece.

If you are wrapping horizontally you would tape along the bottom edge, flip it down, peel off the backing and cut off the backing as close to your cut edge as possible.  Then flip it up and start squeegeeing from the middle out.  Using a wet edge squeegee with a wet application usually works best so that you don’t scratch the image.  You can get a Wet Edge Squeegee here and the Rapid Tac application fluid here.

Ducky Vinyl Wrap is the fluid to finish the job.  This will remove all the water spots, protect and enhance the shine of your nice new wrap!

Wall Art Using Oracal Vinyl Decals

Vinyl wall decals/stickers can be seen at all home good stores, found on Etsy, and are becoming a regular interior designing tool.  They are easy to apply and come in matte finishes so they look like they are hand painted.  They’re easy to switch out and not to mention super cute.  Some  vinyl decals are sold as one big vinyl sticker, while some companies sell lots of smaller stickers that can be applied in lots of different ways.

Here’s some of the decals that we have been loving lately:

Oracal Vinyl th-2 th-3 th-4 th-5 th

We decided to add vinyl decals to our son’s nursery. We used the Oracal 631 matte series vinyl. The Oracal 631 series is a 3-year film; it removes cleanly and easily for up to 2 years after application. It’s an ideal choice for short-to medium-term indoor graphics; great for tradeshows, wall graphics, museum displays, and exhibitions. The matte surface suppresses unwanted reflections and is available in 64 colors.

We designed our son’s decals in Adobe Illustrator with eight different sized rectangles.  We put the rectangles in no particular pattern, so it didn’t look too uniformed. We used 24″ material and made the design 22 1/2 inches wide, so we could cut it on the Graphtec ce-6000 24″ vinyl cutter.  After we cut the vinyl we weeded the unwanted vinyl and applied R-tapes 4050rla Medium Tack application tape.

With the Oracal 631 series a medium tack application tape will make your  life a little easier even though you can get away with the high tack application tape if thats what you had.  Next we placed the graphic on the wall, and taped the middle of the graphic so we could pull the backing off the vinyl and place it on the wall.  After you get the top half of the graphic on the wall, remove the tape in the middle and slowly lay the bottom half of the graphic on the wall. Once you squeegee the graphic with a vinyl applicator start peeling off the application tape slowly making sure the graphic is releasing form the application tape and onto the wall.  We repeated this process until the accent wall was fully covered.

Sign Gold 22 KT Vinyl

Sign Gold is a product that most people have seen on fire trucks, boats, cars and some signage, but here’s some information on why this is a top selling product at Mclogan Supply.

Sign Gold is actual gold and silver metal that is deposited into the underside of a durable weather resistant film.  The best news is that a sealing agent and permanent self-adhesive are applied creating a super durable film.  It’s a superior alternative to gold leafing, since you can create your designs on your computer, then have it cut on a plotter.  You’ll get the same gold leafing look, but with Sign Gold it is much faster and cheaper.  Even if you were to go with a standard gold vinyl, the finish would not look like actual gold leafing.  There’s a brilliance, and texture that comes with using a Sign Gold Vinyl.

There’s 3 vinyls that will be offered on our websites and in stores:

  • 22 KT is a pure gold color
  • 23.5 KT is more of a “yellow” color of gold vinyl
  • .999 Silver is a pure silver color vinyl

22KT and 23.5 KT vinyls are available in 15″ and 24″ rolls, depending on the finishes.  The Florentine Swirl, Satin Surface, Large Engine Turn, X-Large Engine Turn, Large Engine Turn (23.5 KT) are all available in 15″ and 24″ rolls.  The Small Engine Turn is only available in the 15″ roll.  All finishes in the .999 Silver are sold only as 15″ rolls.  The finish Large Engine Turn is only available in the 23.5 KT vinyl in both 15″ and 24″.  claymont

How To Heat Press Vinyl

Heat pressing vinyl onto apparel is a fun and a somewhat easy task once you know how to properly use your heat press and the vinyl.  All  heat press machines and vinyl’s are different, so it is best to test out a strip of your vinyl on one of your garments, before beginning your job or project.  The biggest mistake for most is that they either do not apply enough heat time to the transfer or they apply to much.

Here’s a few simple steps:

*Things you will need: vinyl, transfer paper, garment, heat press, X-acto knife

  1. Lay your vinyl transfer image side up on a flat surface. Careful remove the clear backing with an X-acto knife; you should peel off all the remaining vinyl, so all that you have left is your design.
  2. Set your heat press to the right temperature…again this depends on your vinyl and garment.
  3. Lay out your shirt on the heat press, so that the space you are planning on placing your vinyl is side up and ensure that your garment is smooth/wrinkle free.  Before the graphic gets placed on the shirt preheat the shirt for a few seconds to remove any water that the garment may have absorbed.
  4. Place the vinyl transfer, backing side up on top of the garment.  Lower the heat press and leave it there the amount of seconds dependent on your vinyl.
  5. Lift the heat press and depending on the vinyl you may want to remove the backing right away or wait for the garment to cool down first then remove.  Take a towel or a shirt and rub the transfer lightly, this will ensure that the transfer remains in contact with the shirt and will assist in transfering the heat from the graphic.

The “Art” of Great Advertising with Vehicle Wraps

The “Art” of Great Advertising with Vehicle Wraps – 5 Important Guidelines

Simple message brand well presented

Commercial vehicle wraps could be considered a blend of advertising and art if done well and can create many memorable impressions. Considering the time, money and talent companies commit to produce commercial vehicle wraps in order to build their businesses; it makes sense to apply the fundamentals of good outdoor marketing and good design.

The blend of good marketing principles and the art of wrap design are simple and similar to any effective billboard:

But those simple principles are overlooked more often than you would expect and the intended purpose, advertising and brand recognition, fails.

So why is this medium with so much potential not always as effective as it could be? Consider the success of an effective vehicle wrap advertising requires two diverse skills.

1. The company doing customer’s the wrap must be skilled in this medium, be excellent at installation and have the necessary expertise with large format digital printing

2. The graphics and brand messaging must be done by someone experienced and successful at this type of outdoor advertising much like great billboard design

A vehicle wrap company may be top experts at installation but may lack experience or the staff for designing effective display advertising for a moving vehicle, which is very different than print media. Conversely, the display advertising expert needs a company experienced at installing wraps to ensure their customer is happy with the end product. However, what if you want to be a one-stop-shop?

You can be if you combine the fundamentals for vehicle advertising and good design. Whether you are a graphic designer for outdoor advertising mediums or you own a wrap business interested in increasing market share, these guidelines will help you make visually impactful messages while increasing the return on investment for advertising programs for your business or a clients.

For companies that install vehicle wraps that means more happy clients and that means for vehicles to wrap!

You might find these points somewhat controversial or “not your style”, but keep an open mind. Here are 5 tried and true ways you can dominate with commercial vehicle wraps:

#1: Make sure you brand images are outstanding (literally)

Great brand image and effective message

Extensive market testing shows that Design (not content) is King in terms of gaining people’s trust and keeping their attention for those critical first 2-3 seconds. In a study conducted by Dr.Elizabeth Sillence, a senior lecturer on psychology and communication, found that people developed trust issues related to design. Good, clear design can establish trust immediately vs. poor or confusing design that creates instant rejection. We do indeed judge a book by its cover!

Vehicle wraps flop from a marketing perspective if the company has a poor brand identity or a unclear logo from a design standpoint. Unless you already have nationwide brand recognition, your brand needs to be the primary message for a vehicle wrap. Why? If you are a small or medium sized business trying to gain new business in a community, what you want people to remember is your brand so they can find you later.

Look at your brand identity and logo. If it’s not super professional, eye-catchingly attractive from a design standpoint (confirmed by candid observers) and coveys what you offer in an instant, this is an opportunity – not a problem. For people serious about building their businesses, this is a no brainer. It is an opportunity to redo or update your brand image or logo and make a splash about re-launch too!

#2: Minimize Advertising Copy (a lot)

It’s especially important to keep simple messaging on smaller vehicles. Unless a vehicle is parked, people only have a few seconds to take in your message. With larger vehicles, like trailers that are mainly for stationary use, you have more leeway but this rule still applies.

Brand message pops

There are really only 4 few things that an effective vehicle wrap should have:

      • Powerful brand messaging
      • Your website address
      • Your phone number
      • Tagline message (optional)

Lists or multiple lines of text are not effective as a rule on a vehicle wrap. Since a large portion of your exposure is when the vehicle is moving, people will not remember your brand if there is too much to read. To be continuously effect, you need to convey one to two memorable impressions that will send people to the web to or phone to learn about your business. The rule of thumb is to relate to vehicle wrap ads like a billboard. The more copy on a billboard the less people take away OR miss the message all together.

#3: Avoid Photos (or use them judiciously)

Sure a lot of “wrappers” and designers would not agree with this point but unless you have a very big vehicle with lots of space for relevant pictures, photos generally do not convey your brand. They are distracting if not used judiciously and viewers may end up focused on the pictures – we are wired for look at pictures – and can miss the brand all together. If you do use an image, ask yourself:

      • Does the photo connect the viewers to the company?
      • Does it convey the company’s brand identity?
      • Would the message be more clear or effective without a picture?

Great logo for brand message overwhelmed by the photos

A photo might connect me with what the company does, but if the brand is good and properly executed, it wins easily.

Look at the example on the left. The pictures of the dogs are great and there is certainly a connection to the service. But, they do not convey the brand. Look at their logo…it’s great and you can hardly see it! If the logo was prominent vs. the pictures, the brand, message and information come across with more impact and it would be easier for people to absorb and remember the company.

I only gave myself 2.5 seconds to view the message because that is ALL the time the average viewer has when the vehicle is moving. After 2.5 seconds are up, will your message be lost amid all the elements trying to grab for a potential customers attention.

There are occasions that might call for a well-placed photo. For example on box trucks, big trailers or a very simple message, but there is no question that powerful brand messaging the most effective way to get your name and contact information across quickly. But think about the vehicles you have seen wrapped where the photos dominated. How many of the brand messages got across?

Rule #4: Design to Stand Out in the Crowd (and the roads are getting more crowded every day)

Too many elements

Now don’t get us wrong, we love diamond plate, carbon fiber, tribal flames effects. Some marketers say use these to make your commercial vehicle wrap stand out. Consider the opposite can be true for vehicle wraps for businesses. They are great for fun vehicles, stationary rigs at shows and do add dramatic effect, but not always good for getting your primary message across in a few seconds. Why is that?

To the eye, as your vehicle goes by, all those fills, “noisy” backgrounds, photos, flames and glows, are scattered with visual noise often leave a potential customer saying “but what was the message?”. Designing a vehicle wrap, which stands out, that has impact that can be read, absorbed, and remembered makes it much easier to be seen among the ever-increasing vehicle ad messaging. Clever is good…clutter is not.

Rule #5: Make your Message Simple (and obvious)

Every time potential customers have to work to figure out the brand messaging, it’s a lost prospect and if you think about it, defeats the point of having a commercial vehicle wrap. It is a classic mistake when designing wraps, to confuse this medium with print design. With print design the viewer can absorb the advertising and understand the message if it is well done. With vehicle wrap advertising you have about two blinks of an eye.

So here’s the nutshell….consider that there is one, primary message you’re hoping the viewer will take away:

      • What is it?
      • Does your wrap design effectively communicate it in 2 to 3 seconds?
      • Does it get lost in the visual noise?

Confusing images, scattered information

And here is a lesson to avoid. When designing your vehicle wrap ensure your message and information is legible from a good distance!

So if you want to grow your vehicle wrap business, be the company that understands and uses appropriate images, messaging and brand impact and that understands  how to marketing your clients business as effectively as possible given how their vehicles will be used. Your wraps will stand out in the crowd!
